TURF NEWS IN BRIEF

Alunga, Galteemore, and Dancing Flame were winners at the Otaki Meeting twelve months ago, and Amatory and White Lady were winners at the recent October Meeting.

Cherokee, who is engaged among the maidens at Otaki tomorrow, is a three-year-old half-sister by Colossus to Navaho and she carries the same colours.

Meamea and Export, who will be contesting the open events at Otaki tomorrow from the same stable, were each a winner at the December Meeting two years ago. They are both trained at Otaki.

Aureus ran a most promising race first up for the term at Rangitikei recently when she finished third to Life Guard and Race Call, only two halfheads back, and even over the longer distance at Otaki tomorrow she would not have to improve a deal to be in the first flight. It is not often that a two-year-old contests a maiden race at this period of the season. Counter Lunch, a fullsister to Drachma, is to do so at Otaki tomorrow, and though this will be her first race she has the speed to be with her older rivals for a portion of the journey at least. The trainer R. S. Bagby, according to a northern report, is pleased with the way High Caste came through his Ellerslie race and expects him to be a vastly-improved colt by the time the Great Northern Foal Stakes comes up for decision. The Ring, who recently ran second to Centrepoise at Napier Park at her last start and is engaged in two events at Otaki tomorrow, is a three-year-old daughter of Siegfried and the Lord Quex mare Gay Salute, hence she is a full-sister to Lady Siegfried. She is a member of J. M. Cameron's team. In summing up the Auckland weights the Auckland critic "Archer" does not include Arctic King among his haltdozen likeliest early prospects. He names The Buzzer, Quadroon, Wotan. Master Brierly, Kelly, and Malagigi. A recent addition to R. S. Bagby's team at Ellerslie is a two-year-old colt by Night Raid from Queen March. The newcomer has been at the Ellerslie stud farm since he was foaled and arrived at Ellerslie only a few days ago. He is a compactly-built youngster and in appearance resembles his sire to some extent.

By finishing third in the Vauxhall Handicap at Ellerslie last Monday, Bronwen showed encouraging form. This mare commenced racing only at the Avondale Meeting, and when she has had further experience more is likely to be heard of her. She is a four-year-old daughter of the Kilbroney horse Cambria Park and she is out of the Lucullus mare Recipio. The Riccarton trainer A. S. Ellis expects to race his team at the holiday meetings on the West Coast. Silver Lark, Real Lady, and Maka Ahi are definite, and Leaderette's inclusion will depend on the progress made during the next week. Ellis may also take over Elbanor for the trip on behalf of his owner, Miss O. Stewart, of Rakaia. L Wilson, the trainer of Quadroon, relieved the Nigger Minstrel—Liaison gelding of his Feilding engagement owing to the hardness of the track. There is nothing wrong with this good performer and he is getting through his tasks at Awapuni in good style. Tiger Gain was not without friends for the Manchester Handicap at Feilding a race he had won the two previous years, but he failed to gain a place although he came home quite solidly after being in the rear three furlongs from home. Though he may not be the same brilliant sort he was, the Gainscourt gelding should win further races.
