SPECIAL DAY
TOMORROW'S CRICKET
VETERANS TO REAPPEAR
On the cricket fields tomorrow there will be representatives past and present as well as prospective "stars" of the future —all appearing in a series of special matches. Championship play, except in some odd cases, is being suspended for the day so that cricket may contribute towards the Qity Council fund for the provision of more playing grounds.
Of particular interest will be the appearance of some of the old stalwarts, men like W. S. Brice, H. M. McGirr, J. S. Hiddleston, E. O. Blamires, W. A. Baker, and W. J. R. Christophersen who have been notable figures and outstanding performers in the game. Most of them have made achievements which set a high mark for presentday players, and to see them come back will be an attraction in itself, even if the form of other days has lost its brilliance. There will be no lack of keenness, and to counter the loss of agility in the field there should be some heady work in the handling of the bat and the delivery of the ball, as the "old stagers" certainly know their cricket.
Two former Essex County players will be giving the past representatives a hand. They are F. W. Gilligan (headmaster of the Wanganui Collegiate School) and J. R. Sheffield (coach to the Wellington Cricket Association), and the presence of these two who rose high on the cricket ladder in England will lend added interest to the match in which the past representatives will be opposed by a Wellington Cricket Association's team. Several members of the association's management committee will be opposing the "veterans" in what promises to be a most interesting and entertaining match. Play in this match, on No. 1 wicket at the Basin Reserve, will commence at 11 a.m.
1 Also set down as a Basin Reserve attraction tomorrow is a match between teams representing the Wellington Cricket Association and the Mercantile League, and this, too, will commence at 11 a.m.
On other grounds there will be special matches, and these are to commence at 1.30 p.m. Owing to an injury to a hand, D. C. Collins will not be able to take his place with the past representatives tomorrow. It was unfortunate, too, that an injury caused T. C. Lowry to withdraw from the team.
