ACHILLES SAILS
ROUSING FAREWELL
(By Telegraph—Press Assc iiution.)
AUCKLAND. This Day
Flying a paying-off pennant, the gift of the Mayor, Sir Ernest Davis, the warship Achilles sailed from the Devonport naval base at 10.30 a.m. for England where she will refit and return to New Zealand in May next. A large crowd assembled near the berth, and while the band on the quarter-deck played rollicking naval airs appropriate to the occasion, final good-byes were said between the men and their wives and children and sweethearts. As the vessel drew away there was a strange silence followed by mighty cheers from the quayside and the vessel. A bevy of small craft escorted the warship down the harbour. Her route will be Suva, Tahiti. Panama, and Jamaica. Commodore Glennie is in command.
