CHURCH & GOVERNMENT

CARDINAL'S COMMENT

ENSLAVEMENT OF MAN CONDEMNED

(By Telegraph—Pres3 Association—Copyright.)

(Received December 1, 2.30 p.m.)

MONTREAL, November 30,

"The actions of Herr Hitler in persecuting helpless minorities constitute a striking example of what a Godless Government will do when it reverts to paganism," stated Cardinal Villeneuvs, addressing the Board of Trade.

He condemned Communism, Nazism, and Fascism as enslavement of man. The Church was not blind to the dangers of Fascism, but nevertheless it was unfair to place Signor Mussolini and Herr Hitler on the same moral plane, especially since Signor Mussolini's contribution at Munich towards averting war.

It was not within the sphere of the Church to condemn or approve any form of government, he said, but it was its duty to protest against any system which violated Christianity. Thus the Church was neutral towards Social Credit and Liberal and Conservative Parties.

Rich and poor must dwell together harmoniously, and if the workers were encouraged to look towards ownership the gulf between vast wealth and poverty would be partly bridged.
