FOR LONG FLOWERING
There are multitudes of beautiful plants easy to grow and suitable for every purpose, but many of them have a very short season, and if they are perennial they occupy space for me rest of the year without giving any return. There are, however, quite a number, both annual and perennial, which, having all the merits above mentioned, flower for a considerable period, while others are beautiful for their foliage or berries (fruits) after the flowering season is over. Amongst the most useful annuals are Iceland poppies, nemesias, Phlox drummondi, sweet peas, if they are regularly picked and the plants kept growing healthily, calendulas, dianthus, zinnias, stocks, and asters. Of the perennials, special mention must be made of dahlias, which, if planted early, will flower from Christmas till Easter. Pansies and violas, primroses and polyanthuses are splendid spring flowering plants Chrysanthemums may be had in flower throughout the late autumn and winter by planting a selection of early and late-flowering varieties. Roses, too, give a good account of themselves. Most kinds have two flowering seasons, spring or early summer and autumn. Delphiniums also have two flowering times. If the first flower spikes are removed before they form seeds, fresh growths are sent up in the autumn. Mimulus or monkey musk, when grown in damp positions, flowers for a long time. Verbenas are excellent plants, having flowers of many brilliant colours and continuing in bloom throughout the summer months. \
