IL CIRCOLO ITALIANA

! The pleasant rooms of the New Zea« land Educational Institute were well filled with members and friends when the Circolo di Lingua c Cultura Italiana held its fortnightly meeting thera recently. Doctor Marshall Mac Donald presided and the patron, Commendatore B. D'Acunzo (Consul for Italy) was present, with Signora D'Acunzo. The first part of the evening was deyoted to the * instruction of the Italian language by Signor A. Comparini. Then followed an excellent and amusing programme for which Madame R. Finlayson was responsible. The first item was a delightful- costume play entitled "La Moglie Muta," which Signora D'Acunzo had translated from the original French play. This comedy was based on a farce of the Middle Ages. Professor E. J. Boyd Wilson played the part of Sinione (husband), whose wife, Caterina (Signora D'Acunzo) is dumb. Dottore Polidaro (Dr. Carbery) played an amusing part. The role Pietro was played by Dr. A. C. Keys, the two .servants were Gigia (Miss F. Huntingdon) and Giannino (Mr. Eric Grindstead). The two assistants of Doctor Polidaro were Mr. Hanlon and Mr. Scoons. Then followed the musical items which were warmly applauded. These were "The First Movement of ths Trio" (Mendelssohn) and some songs. The trio was artistically played by Mrs. A. C. Keys (piano), Miss O. Burton (violin), and Mrs. -D. W. McKenzie ('cello). Mr. G. Wilson (tenor) then, contributed three vocal numbers, "Che Gelida . Manina," from Puccini's "La Boheme"; "Non piu Andrai," from Nozze di Figaro, and "Star Vicina,'* which were much appreciated. The singing of "Giovenezza" and "God Save the King" concluded a very successful evening. , Signora A. Comparini was the accompanist. Supper was served. ' ■
