RARE VELVET FOR MUSEUM

A rare piece of eighteenth-century Chinese velvet has been presented to the Victoria "and Albert Museum, states the "Daily Telegraph." It is hanging in the New Acquisition Room, but it will ultimately form part of the permanent Chinese art collection, in the North Court, to be selected by Mr. Leigh Ashton.

An important acquisition is the Italian marble angel of the Aununciation, of the fourteenth century, hitherto on loan. It has been famous since Mr. Mason Perkins identified it many years ago as belonging to a figure of the Virgin in the Louvre.

Gainsborough's famous colouredchalk portrait of the first Lord Rivers, which attracted attention when exhibited at the great Gainsborough Exhibition at Cincinnati in 1931 and has until lately been in an American collection, is another addition.
