GILDO AT LAST
WELLINGTON BOUT
AGAINST JACK JARVIS
On Thursday night Wellington boxing patrons will see in action against Jack Jarvis, of Eltham, "Young" Gildo, Filipino boxer, who has been one of the biggest draws in New Zealand boxing in the past two seasons. Gildo arrived in New Zealand when "lethargic" could describe quite well the general attitude of the public towards boxing, but after his early performances people turned up in large numbers to watch the brilliant Filipino in action. He had personality, and there was rare colour about his boxing. After about 15 contests in different parts of the country last year, he departed for Australia, where he continued his winning way. in one bout decisively beating Joe Hall, ex-light-weight champion of Australia, who toured New Zealand a few seasons back. Gildo has done most of his boxing in Auckland this season, and has again met with success. He is stated to be even faster than last year, and it is anticipated that many fans will roll up to see him meet a very worthy opponent in Jack Jarvis. Last year, when Jarvis was lightweight champion of New Zealand, the pair met four times, Jarvis winning twice, Gildo once, and the other match being drawn. The bout between the pair at Wellington was one of the best of the season, possibly being overshadowed only by the Gildo-Rayner bout earlier in the year, when Ray-! ner, after a magnificent bout, was beaten on a technical knock-out in the fourteen tli round. Rayner, incidentally, beat Gildo on points, at Blenheim, later in the year. Of his 15 bouts, Gildo won 11, lost three, and drew one. He was beaten by Jack Jarvis twice, once at Wellington and once at Auckland, and by Billy Aitken once at Invercargill. In his first bout in New Zealand this year Gildo beat "SnowyV Clark, of Australia, on points, at Auckland, but in a later bout in the same centre, Clark reversed the decision. On August 11, at Palmerston North, Gildo was again beaten on points by Billy Aiti ken, of Wellington, but in a recent ! bout in Auckland Gildo won his first bout against the New Zealander od points. JACK- JARVIS. Jarvis's record is well known to New Zealanders. For over two years
he held the lightweight title, losing it recently to Rayner, at Blenheim. He has had some unfortunate setbacks, but is back in form and can be relied upon to extend Gildo on Thursday. On the same programme, Fred Finnigan and Joe Hansen, two well-known Wellington boys, will meet in an eightround bout. Finnigan packs a nasty right, but Hansen is a good, fast hitter himself, and there should be little between them. Both had fine amateur records.
