THORNDON CLUB
The ceremony at the Thorndon Club was a happy one and the ground and surroundings made a delightful setting for the proceedings. The president of the club (Mr. H. J. Wynne) welcomed the visitors and remarked that the weather conditions were a happy augury for the coming i season. He referred to the loss the club had suffered through the death of three respected members, Messrs. H. E. Mowbray, A. G v Porter, and G. W. Wright. The past') season had been! quite successful and most enjoyable,; and he complimented the greenkeeper (Mr. W. H. Peters) on the state of perfection to which he had again brought the green. Mr. Wynne paid a warm tribute to the ladies for their valuable assistance on the social side, particularly in connection with the afternoon's function. Mr. M. J. Casey, president of the Wellington Bowling Centre, and vicepresident of the New Zealand Bowling Council, wished the club a happy and! successful season and congratulated the ! president and members on the excel-1 lent state of the green and surround-j ings. He also complimented the club • on its high social standard and its prowess at the game. Mr.. C. H. Chapman said that opening ceremonies came round with the regularity of birthdays, but were much more welcome to many people because they meant the opening of another season of good fellowship and friendly rivalry. He congratulated the" committee on the improvements and said he wondered whether they had acquired £100 for furniture. (Laughter.) \ Wherever the money had come from; congratulations were in order for the : result achieved, and the committee had looked after the interests and comfort of members exceedingly well. The,
