ON TRENTHAM TRACKS

MASTERTON HORSES

CENTRE'S TEAM OF FORTY

(By "Rangatira.")

With some forty of the centre's horses engaged at the Masterton Racing Club's Spring Meeting next Wednesday and Thursday, and with the Wellington Meeting due to commence the following week, the Trentham tracks are busier at present than they have been for many months.' Trentham

horses began the season somewhat backward after a very wet winter, and in the first two months of the term they won only three races, two by Southern Blood and one by White Lady, but from now on they promise to fare with much better success.

After yesterday's rain, amounting to a third of an inch in the valley, the tracks were freshened this morning, but they were slightly easy only and still afforded, fast going. Most of the horses engaged at Masterton were sent against time.

Accomplice (A. G. P. Newnham) and Good Sun (R. L. Hitchen) ran a mile in lmin 45 2-ssec, the last half-mile in 51 4-ssec, with the mare finishing a shade in front. Debham and Royal Star II galloped earlier but were not timed.

Punarua (Hitchen) scampered over half a mile in 50sec. Sunny Blonde (R. B. Lorigan) was a head in front of Diareus (S. G. Robinson) after taking 49 3-ssec. Ugly Duckling (F. Power) occupied 54sec.

An attractive trial was that in which Alunga (A. W. Sim) just shaded Dungarvan (W. Doyle) at the end of a smart six furlongs in lmin 15sec, the last half-mile in 50 l-ssec. They went away very fast and were not unnaturally tiring a little at the close.

Galteemore... (A. Foster) beat Boomerang (A. E. Bennet) by four lengths over a mile in lmin 45sec, the last half-mile in 52 4-ssec.

Peerless (Doyle) came on well at the close of seven furlongs to finish on terms with Roaming (Sim) in lmin 30sec, the last half-mile in 52sec. Siegmund' (J. McCauley) was always at the rear but he was going along smoothly at the close. Peerless was not herself for some time after Wanganui, but she is picking up .again.

Hinerawe (Foster), finishing well, caught Floral Robe (Bennet) on the post at the end of seven furlongs in lmin 30 2-ssec, the last half-mile in 53 4-ssec. Alloa (Sim) was a length or so behind them all the way.

Raroa (Bennet) was going better than Trebor (Foster), a lazy worker, at the end of six furlongs in lmin 17sec, the last half-mile in 51 2-ssec. Sardue (Doyle) and Liane (I. C. Curley) ran the last half-mile of five furlongs in 51 l-ssec

War Cloud (Robinson) just held off Twenty Grand (R. A. Hawkings), with Lady Lyric (Lorigan), a length back, after covering five furlongs in lmin 3 4-ssec, the last half-mile in 50 2-ssec. Free Gold (Sim) took 39sec for three furlongs, and Lustral (Foster) required 40sec.

Silver Fox (Power) did an easy mile in lmin 49sec. Quimper (D. Lamb) beat Royal Show (V. Bevan) by a length over half a mile which was not timed. Beau Livre (G. Flood) was doing better than Siglow (Newnham) at the end of half a mile in 52 3-ssec. Twilight Song (Weston) and Southern Blood (Lamb) each sprinted down the straight.

Two lots of juveniles were sprinted three furlongs from the six furlongs barrier down the arm of the course proper, but they could not be timed. Gothic (Hawkins), Prudent Prince (Robinson), and the Defoe —Switch On filly (R. Hawes) were together in their trial; and Beau Vite (Doyle) and Sceptre (Power) beat Tristan (McCauley) and Dark Water (J. Nicholson), with Anita Foe (Lamb) failing to jump away, in the other trial.

Sunee (L. T. Nesbitt) was sent over six fences and he gave a faultless school.

White Lady. Wedding Eve, War Lord. Sigurd, Coronado, Mother-in-Law, Arctic King, Telamon, Cherokee, Lady Baron, Acrobat, and Sunder all did serviceable tasks without being required to go against the clock.

Riding engagements for Masterton include:—S. Wilson, Arctic King, White Lady, Sunny Blonde, Ugly Duckling, and Beau Vite; W. Doyle, Dungarvan, Floral Robe, Lustral; A. E.
