SPORTS EXHIBIT
"HALL OF CHAMPIONS"
As a result of the meeting of sports representatives in Wellington towards the end of last month to consider the proposal of a sports exhibit at the Centennial Exhibition. 30 controlling bodies of sport.in the Dominion have been circularised placing before them further details and asking < whether they will be prepared to co-operate and contribute towards the cost. A rectangular court 100 ft long, 10ft wide, and 12ft high is visualised for the display of important national sporting trophies and enlarged portraits of famous New Zealand sportsmen. It was stated at the recent meeting that the cost involved would be approximately £1000.
The promoters of the scheme are anxious to know what support can be expected so that they may know whether to proceed further, and the sports bodies have been asked to reply to the letter by November 30 and to advance any suggestions on the subject.
"It is clearly an opportunity for sport to help itself and display to young New Zealand and many thousands of- overseas visitors exactly where New Zealand has stood in sport during half a century at least," states the circular letter, which is signed on behalf of the promoters by the chairman, Mr. A. F, Wiren. "I feel, as others do, too," the letter continues, "that a New Zealand Centennial Exhibition without a 'hall of champions' displaying sports portraits and trophies would leave room for strong resentment."
