HELSINKI, October 6.
Thirteen people were killed and twelve injured when an express and a goods train collided in a fog between Rauha and Tainonkoski, resulting in the explosion of a tank of sulphur-dioxide, the majority of the victims being asphyxiated.
The accident occurred because some J of the wagons of an unusually lons goods train were shunted on to the main track. The driver, hearing the approach of the express, leapt for his life as the express crashed "into the wagons, telescoping two sleeping cats and killing the first victim. c
Gas overcame the men and women who were climbing out of the sleeping cars, and they fell back into the splintered coaches and died. Those who attempted to render first aid, be^ ing without gas-masks, were unable to approach until the fumes had dispersed. Meanwhile they watched five people succumb. The debris is expected to yield further corpses. The driver of the goods train and another employee were arrested.
