TUNNEL UNDER THE THAMES

RUGBY, October 5,

.The pilot boring of the Dartford to Purfleet tunnel under the Thames which will join the counties, of Essex and Kent, was completed yesterday, when the last five feet of the curtain of chalk was broken through. There was an error of only three-eighths o£ an inch in the line and three-sixteenths of an inch in the level of the tunnel when the two borings from the Essex and Kent sides met. The total length of the pilot tunnel is 2832 feet.
