POLITICS AND BEAUTIFYING

Sir, —More than one report has appeared in the Press having reference to the Wellington Beautifying Society where Mr. C. H. Chapman is reported as having said that "there are some people who join a beautifying society for the sake of the advertisement they get out of it," and remarks to the effect that the Wellington Beautifying Society took credit for work that had been done by the reserves department of the City Council.
In the first place we take strong exception to the gratuitous work of unselfish and civic minded citizens being belittled from a political platform and for political reasons.
In passing we would point out that the society is working in the closest and most friendly co-operation with the reserves department of the City Council and has no thought of taking or attempting, to take credit for the work the department is doing, for members are quite cognisant of the fact that upwards of £30,000 per annum is taken from the rate levy to
