WOMEN'S INSTITUTES
A recent meeting of the Upper Hutt Women's Institute was presided over by Mrs. Spencer, president. Arrangements were made for the sixth birthday party. Mrs. Spackman demonstrated Italian quilting. She was thanked and presented with a posy. The winners of the competitions for the month wire as follows:—Cretonne article, Mrs. Hyslop; chocolate cake, Mrs. J. Hazelwood; thrift article, Mrs. Braid 1, and Mrs. Hyslop 2. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses.
The Taita Women's institute met in the Taita Hall on Tuesday. Mrs. Bonthorne presided over a fair attendance and extended a welcome to all. One minute's silence was observed as a mark of respect for the late Mrs. Quin, who was garden circle convener. Two I piano solos were given by Mrs. Gorrie, after which a dainty afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Foster and Pemberton. An instructive demonstration of the making of thrift articles was given by Mrs. Braid, and there was a short period of community singing. Competitions won during the afternoon were as follows: —Shortbread, Mrs. Draper, 1; Mrs. Sage, 2. Best flower in the garden, Mrs. Jackson. Gardening circle novelty, Mrs. Hunter. Parcels were received for the lepers on Makogai Island.
The word "bunkum" got its place in the language 115 years ago when a southern American, who continually tired out Congress with his windy speeches, always announced he was speaking "for Buncombe County, North Carolina."
