ATHENIAN CLUB

"SHIP COMES HOME"

For the final gathering of the present season members and friends of the Athenian Club assembled in force at the Assembly Hall on Wednesday night to make their popular fancydress ball one of the most entertaining on. record. The theme selected by the general committee was "S.S. Athenian on World Tour" and the members were not slow to appreciate its possibilities in masquerade and mimicry.

The stage showed a giant red-fun-nelled liner, "S.S. Athenian," at anchor in calm flood-lit waters, with lights atwinkle, and the shore lined with bright trees, shrubs, and flowers and still more lights. The hall represented the nearby quay. The walls were decorated wituflags of all nations, coloured Athenian pennants in several languages, and festoons of streamers and garlands of flowers. Union Jacks were draped about large coloured plaques of their Majesties, and a watchful bulldog proudly proclaimed "British and proud of it."

Each, lady present received a dainty souvenir—a kerchief and a phial of perfume, and each gentleman a notebook.

The controller 'of ceremonies was Mr. H. Strangemure. Dancing and revelry continued till the early hours. A large majority of the assemblage were in fancy dress. The judges, Mr. and Mrs. G. H. Swan, had an unusually difficult task in selecting the prizewinners, but finally made eight awards as follows: —National, Mrs. E. Loader ("Africa") and Mr. W. Redish ("American Cowboy); original, Miss Rona Williams ("Carnival") and Mr. W. Frew ("Oliver Hardy"); fancy, Mrs. E. Bellam ("Early Victorian") and Mr. E. Bellam ("Guards"); humorous, Mrs. W. Hough ("Tootache") and Mr. W. Band ("Measles"); highly commended, Shandy's Musical Troupe ("On Our Selection").

Mrs. Swan was presented with a bouquet to mark the club's appreciation.

The programme contained many novelty dances, two very amusing numbers being "Deck Quoits," a competitive fox-trot (which was won by Mr. Solomon and Miss Charles), and "CutOuts," a puzzle-matching interlude (won by Mrs. W. Frew and Miss Wood).

The gathering concluded with a very hearty ovation for the general committee and officials of the club, who were specially commended by the president, Mr. E. Loader, for their co-operation and achievements throughout one of the Athenian Club's most successful seasons.
