WHITE GOLD WELL
LAUGHING LASS PLEASES
(Special to the "Evening Post.")
PALMERSTON N., This Day.
With Wellington only a fortnight away horses with engagements at Trentham are now being set more severe tasks, and yesterday there were a number of very interesting gallops. Laughing Lass, with a light boy up, worked pleasingly over six, and White Gold, Old Surrey, and Beaupartir also showed to advantage. The going was good, but the last three furlongs were against a strong wind. Pas de Cheval and Vascones were clocked to run three furlongs in 40sec, finishing together after a very smooth effort. Copycat alone recorded the same time.
Laughing Lass flashed away from the six furlongs to run the first three in 39 3~ssec. From that on she found the work much harder, but she was still going on with it at the post and completed the distance in lmin 21sec. Laughing Lass is very well at present and she should reach top form by Wellington.
The most interesting gallop of the morning was that of Old Surrey and Beaupartir, who jumped away short of the mile peg. Old Surrey immediately went into the lead, and they- ran the first three furlongs in 39 3-ssec an.d four furlongs in about 53sec. With Beaupartir covering extra ground, Old Surrey turned for home a couple of lengths to the good, but Beaupartir then threw out his challenge and they finished almost on terms to complete the distance in better than lmin 50sec, the last seven furlongs in lmin 36sec. Old Surrey is galloping better than ever before and Beaupartir is improving all the time. Pango beat Hirangi over five furlongs in lmin 7 2-ssec, the last three in 40 2-ssec.
White Gold sprinted six furlongs on her own, and, after running to the three furlongs in 39 2-ssec, she came home the last three in 41 2-ssec to complete in lmio 21 4-ssec. She was stopping a bit at the finish but it was a very nice gallop. Silver River worked over a mile and a quarter, going very kindly, and florence Mills sprinted half a mile in 52sec, maintaining an even pace throughout. The Crooner broke 40sec for the first three of six furlongs, and the wind in the straight did not appear to make much difference to him, as he finished strongly in lmin 22 l-ssec.
