ANOPHELES FANCIED
TAKANINI'S LIKELY'HAND
(Special to the "Evening Post.")
TAKANINI, October 6. The form of Takanini horses at recent meetings has been very encouraging, and at Paeroa last week two ™x% winners from this centre were saddled up The local candidates for the Auckland Meeting on Saturday promise again to take a prominent part in the decision of their engagements, and the pr-ospects of Anopheles, Orelio, Maxam, Paddy the Rip, Hot Box, Palustre, and Royevrus particularly are being freely discussed. ' The prediction that Paddy the Rip would prove himself at a distance was amply justified last Saturday, when he scored in the Hack Cup, over nine furlongs. He won narrowly but convincingly, and this was his third success on end. He is engaged m the Gordon Handicap on Saturday and should, again go well, but he is now reaching a position in the handicaps at which his tasks are becoming more difficult. ROYEVEUS PLEASES. Royevrus has been working in approved style since winning a double ax the Avondale Meeting, and he is to take his place i" the Flying Handicap to several winners. . On paper, Inver looks to be well in the Flying Handicap, and, as his track work indicates that he is again near his best, he should prove a force to be reckoned with. t^i,It would appear on paper that lai<a nini has an excellent chance otwinning the Welcome Stakes with either Anopheles or Orelio. Their respective merits place them about even in .the minds of local critics, but Anopheles may still be the better under colours. Orelio played with the field on the second day at Avondale, but neither the first nor second horse was a contestant on that occasion. In addition, Anopheles had the. services of an apprentice in the Avondale Stakes but m the Welcome Stakes she will be piloted by C. G. Goulsbro'. HOT BOX'S CHANCE. Last season's headline/, Hot Box, has been going along steadily since racing at Avondale, and there seems every indication that he has improved with the race. He did not contest the Avondale Guineas owing to the soft state of the track, to which he is not partial, but with firmer conditions at Ellerslie he will be allowed to take his place in the Guineas field on Saturday. He is a very capable three-year-old, of whom the best has yet to be seen, and it would occasion no surprise to find him figuring prominently in his immediate engagements. Although he was never a good trackworker, Arvakur, who is an acceptor for the Shorts Handicap, has been shaping poorly in his work, and in most of his gallops he has finished weakly. The noise he is making points rather forcibly to the fact that his affliction is being felt to a greater disadvantage, and it seems that his future will be impaired accordingly. Palustre has returned to form, and revealed much of her former dash in a recent workout over five furlongs in lmin 2sec, time which she could have improved. A very speedy mare, she is not far removed from the best class of sprinter racing in the north, and if the track remains firm for Saturday ishe impresses as a likely lightweight in 1 the open sprint. . | Round Up, who has failed to make 1 an impression in the three handicap events that he has contested this season, is among the acceptors for the Flying Handicap, and while he has disappointed in his efforts over 1£ miles, he is quite a capable performer over a shorter course and is a very fit horse at the moment.
