"HE'S JUST A HORSE!"
To many people in Australia who have been trying to discount New Zealand form, Royal Chief has been something of a surprise packet, says a Sydney writer, despite the fact that for more than a generation the best horses from the Dominion have proved themselves capable of holding their own (and commonly a bit over) against the best in the Commonwealth. Some who come to mind are Rapine, Cruciform, Desert Gold, Bobrikoff, Advance, Soultline, Limerick, Ballymena, Cuddle, Machine Gun, Sasanof, not to mention.Phar Lap, Trenton, Carbine, and Lochiel.
Royal Chief has been a surprise for many people because of the difference between his brilliant form and his appearance as an individual. They knew he was a consistent performer in New Zealand, but to many of them he did not look the part of a star. ''He's just a horse," said a veteran racing man seeing him for the first time at Warwick Farm. Undoubtedly this opinion has been changed with his successes since.
