POINT HOWARD
WATER & SEWERAGE
PROPOSAL FOR LOAN
Plans for a water and sewerage system at Point Howard have been advanced by the Hutt County Council's decision to consider at its meeting on October 21 a motion to apply to the Lbcal Government Loans Board for permission to borrow £5300. At one stage there was the suggestion that separate loans should be raised for water and for sewerage, but it has now been decided to have a combined loan for the two purposes. As security for the loan the council proposes to pledge for twenty-five years a special rate of 2£d in the £ on the capital value of all rateable property in the district.
It is also proposed to give owners of properties the opportunity of voting on a loan of £2000, which will enable advances to be made so that householders can connect up with the scheme. The term of this loan is seven years.
There are seventy properties of a total value of £34,340 affected by the loan proposals. Point Howard is fast developing as a residential area, and the value of land has been enhanced by the rapid growth of industry nearby. In the past there has been an agitation for better means for fighting fires, and the installation of water will help towards this end.
The Eastbourne. Borough Council draws water from a reservoir on the hill at Point Howard, and it is proposed that the water fori Point Howard shall be purchased from the Eastbourne supply. The Labour Department will assist with the scheme.
.Schemes have been drawn up for water and sewerage to be installed at all eastern harbour bays, and these are now under consideration.
