SAVING THE COUNTRY

PARIS, October 5.
The Premier, M. Daladier, made an impassioned speech at 5 a.m. today, after which he obtained an overwhelming majority for the Plenary Powers Bill and saved the Government from defeat which threatened after midnight when the Socialists opposed him. The voting was 331 votes for the Bill and 78 against. There were 208 abstentions, including the Socialists.
The Premier emphasised the urgency of France's economic needs. The plenary powers, he said, were hourly vital for the salvation of the country. Demobilisation was not yet complete and the international situation was still
