PHYSICAL CULTURE

A DIRECTOR FOR N.S.W.

.From "The Post's" Representative.)

SYDNEY, September 29

The New South Wales Cabinet has appointed Mr. Gordon Young, of Montreal, Canada, as director of physical education in New South Wales. Mr. Young, who is 33 years of age, is expected to take up his duties about the middle of December. His salary, for the beginning, will be £950 a /year.

The Minister .of Education, Mr. Drummond, said that the Cabinet was satisfied that it had obtained the best man possible for the position. There had been applications from Australia, India, South Africa, Great Britain, and Canada, and if there had been an Australian with first-class qualifications he would have received preference. In addition to Mr. Young's qualifications as a physical culture director, he also had a good academic record, and an obvious flair for organisation. It was part of the plan that Mr. Young would build up a trained staff of teaphers. He would be expected to direct all physical education activities. The appointment of Mr. Young was recommended to the Cabinet by the Public Service Board, which had received advice from New South Wales educationists now abroad.

Mr. Young obtained his degree of Bachelor of Science at the International V.M.C.A. College, of Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1927. He also graduated Bachelor of Arts at the Western University, Ontario. At present he is Director of Physical Education of the Central V.M.C.A. of Montreal. In 1926 he received the American Red Cross certificate with honours, and the Royal Life-saving proficiency medallion and the Award of Merit certificates. Mr. Young has also qualified as a private and commercial pilot. In 1933 he was secretary of the British Empire Games trials in London, Ontario. Between 1929 and 1933 he was commissioned by the London (Ontario) Board of Education to organise mass swimming classes, which proved successful. In addition he has promoted many athletic activities in Ontario.
