FRIENDLY SOCIETIES
COUNCIL CRITICISED
At the fortnightly meeting of Court Sir George Bowen No. 5084, >A.Q.F.» held last night the following resolution was carried uhanhnotjsly:—
That owing to the failure, of the Dominion Council of Friendly Societies to keep the members advised as" to the negotiations with tlie Government in* connection with the clauses in thi SocM Security Act, 1938,. dealing with' friendly societies, this meetins has' ho confidence in that body, and considers it unfair, and unjust that on the eve of the election. the friendly societies should be in ignorance of the full intentions of the Government with .regard to friendly society membership. :;?' Speakers stressed the xiact that the three benefits, medical, dispensary, and hospital, would be tiakeh over by., the Government, and as no member would require these benefits twice over, once from the society and once from the Government, and further as a member receiving £250 per annum will pay £12 10s—plus £1 levy—it is unlikely that members will be recruited simply for the sick pay received -from the society and the societies must be slowly strangled.
