LIVESTOCK MARKETS
VARIATIONS IN PRICES
BEEF CHEAPER AT AUCKLAND
First-class offerings of beef came forward at the Westfield stock sale yesterday, but the heavier yardings and consequent weaker competition caused a fall in prices equal to about 10s to 15s a head. Average yardings of sheep met with a ready sale at firm late rates. Hoggets sold steadily at improved rates. Average numbers of calves brought good prices for prime sorts, with the larger proportion of small and rough easing in value. A small offering of pigs came forward, and porkers under keen competition improved on late rates, while baconers were steady. There was a small entry of fat cattle at Burnside sale, and competitipn was keen from start to finish, with the result that prices rose from £1 to £2 a head. Medium wethers comprised the bulk of the fat sheep offered, and prices for wethers were firm on late rates throughout, while ewes firmed by about Is a head. Some shorn wethers came forward, and these found a disappointing market. There was a small entry of. fat pigs, which sold under keen competition at an appreciation of 5s to 7s a head for porkers and 5s a head for baconers.
