ROYAL HONOURS
There was a very large gathering of Wellington citizens, and many relatives and friends of those - who' received honours from his Majesty the King at Government House last night, the scene being a very brilliant and interesting one. The investiture was carried out by his Excellency the Gover-nor-General with the usual dignity and impressiveness. Her Excellency was with him and his official secretaries,.as well as the house party, which included JLord Lothian, Sir J. BurnettStuart, Mr. Heathcote Helmore (Christchurch), and the wives of the honorary aides, Mesdames Wilkes, Bowerbank, and Puttick. FLOWERS FEATURED. The large ballroom was used for the ceremony, and looked extremely well with its cream... and crimson colour scheme, which was enhanced by a delightful grouping of conservatory flowers across the stand where the orchestra was situated, and tall stands of bamboo in each corner. The loggia was arranged comfortably with many flowers —in fact, flowers were a feature everywhere. In the main drawing-room were witch bowls of arum lilies andj golden tinted blooms, and stands oS exquisite giant phlox iri delicate pink tones, cinerarias being used in these stands as well. Crystal bowls of ranunculi made fine points of colour, while purple irises, Jong-stemmed and graceful, were also ..there with a floating bowl of large,:pink begonias near by. In the smaller room were arum lilies again, arranged with a yellow tropical plant, and large bowls of polyanthus. In the hall were groups of bamboo, while' in the main dining-room were gold candelabra, golden vases and trophies, and low bowls x of vivid sparaxis and white daisies were interspersed'down the long tables. In the entrance hall, where supper was also served, were bowls, of lilies and golden tinted flowers, the billiard-room supper tables having a decor of the same flowers, very effectively arranged. Following the arrival of their Excellencies and party, the National •Anthem was played, arid Major Byron announced the names of the recipients of honour's arid the reasons of the bestowal of them. All the guests were presented to their Excellencies. HER EXCELLENCY'S*] GOWN. Lady Galway wore her several handsome orders on a gown, of ivory satin, with flame satin lining the divided' train and shoulder drapes. The belt was fastened with a jewelled clip and on the right shoulder a spray of pale pink flowers was worn. A handsome diamond tiara and a collar, necklace of' diamonds With ruby pendant were worn also, and a flame-coloured ostrich plume fan was carried. Mrs. B. G. G. Byron wore a trairied gown of white satin brocade, with halter bodice effect. From one. shoulder fell a drape of the material caught with three diamond clips. Diamond hair ornaments, diamond earrings, and a rope of pearls were also worn. Lord and Lady Galway's four children, the Hons. -Mary, .Isabel, Celia Monckton; and the Hon. Simon Monck-ton-Arundel, were present during the investiture. The Hon. Mary Monckton •wore a frock of deep blue velvet with lace collar, and the Hon. Isabel Monckton and the .Hon. Celia Monckton ,were dressed alike in frocks ot dusky >pink velvet with lace, collars. Each wore a dainty necklace of-coral. , ', * LIST OF HONOURS. Two knighthoods were included in the honours. His Excellency conferred them upon Sir Theodore Rigg, director of the Cawthron Institute, Nelson, and Sir Thomas - Eastcrfield, Nelson, and invested them with the Insignia of a Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. MOTHERS' HELPERS Mrs. Guthrie presided at a recent meeting of the Mothers' Helpers' Committee. The secretary reported that owing to the prevalence of illness and the shortage of resident domestics, the society was unusually busy. It was not generally known, the report said, that these reliable people were available for night housekeeping in return for a moderate fee.
