BEST ON RECORD

LIFE-SAVING SEASON

SURF ASSOCIATION REPORT

That the past season has been the most successful on record is the opinion expressed in the annual report of the Wellington District Surf Life-saving Association, to be presented at the annual meeting on Monday night. This has been due to the successful working of the new committee composed of club delegates, and to the carrying through of a definite policy of progress.

The report gives a detailed record covering the Wellington and New Zealand championships and the various inter-club contests held during the season. It is recorded that no fewer than six New Zealand titles went to Wel-. lington teams, six of whose members were selected to represent New Zealand in the surf team which competed in Australia.

The following clubs entered successful candidate** for the association's surf medallion: V.M.C.A. (8), Maranui (6) Paekakariki (3), and Lyall Bay (1)! In addition, a surf instructor's certificate was gained by W. Griffen (Lyall Bay). The financial position of the association is much better than has been the case on any previous occasion. The installation of a public address system at each carnival conducted by the association has assisted in this respect. The London Trophy inter-district points competition for general efficiency was won by the Wellington district. . A definitely progressive step was made by the association during the past season in arranging for patrols on the Titahi Bay beach, and it hopes by the end of the coming season to have .egular patrols on the more popular beaches throughout the district. During the season the V.M.C.A. Surf Lifesaving Club obtained quarters in the new pavilion at Oriental Bay and commenced activities. The enthusiasm j shown by this club was soon made] evident. _ j

A meeting of residents of Paraparaumu Beach was called during the year with the object of forming a life-saving club. Representatives of the association attended the meeting and reported that a club had been successfully formed. It is to be hoped that this new club will affiliate during the coming season and members are urged to lend their full support, as much remains to be done.
