WOMEN'S INSTITUTES
HOSPITALITY SCHEME
Mrs. Summers, vice-president, .presided at a meeting of the Stokes Valley Women's Institute. The hospitality scheme in connection with the Centennial Exhibition was discussed, and Mesdames Wylie and Bathurst were chosen as delegates to the half-yearly council meeting to be held at Silverstream in October. Appreciation of the work of the drama circle convener, Mrs. Hurney, was voiced by Mrs. Combe, who also presented Mrs. Hurney with a charming bouquet.
Mrs. Baker, accompanied by Mrs. Liebezeit, rendered a bracket of items. A sketch, acted by members of the drama circle, was also well received, those taking part being Mesdames Bathurst, Simon, Combe, Kay, Melrose, Thompson, Miss August, and Miss E. August.
A well-stocked "Bring ' and Buy" stall did excellent business. The winners of the competitions were: Best bloom, Mrs. Freeman; girdle scones, Mrs. Thompson 1, Mrs. Holloway 2; guessing competitions: Mrs. Boyes and Miss A. Kane. INTEREST AT PORIRUA. The Porirua Women's Institute met recently, when Mrs. Ryan presided over a fair attendance. Five new members were welcomed. Mrs. Wright demonstrated "eggshell moasic" work, which was most interesting. She displayed a few articles which had been treated in this way, and they were much admired. The "golden thread"
talk took the form of a reading from an overseas women's institute magazine.
I Mrs. C. Hasse congratulated the glee circle on its success at the recent Wellington musical competitions. Mrs. Ryan rendered two solos delightfully. Suggestions for the next six months' programme were invited. . A, delicious afternoon tea was served by the hostesses. WALLACEVIIXE WOMEN. A meeting of the Wallaceville Women's Institute was fairly well attended, Mrs. Denovan (president) being in the chair. A very interesting demonstration on the making of "sweet posies" was given by Mrs. Gorrie. The rest of the afternoon was spent in games and community singing.
Mesdames Allen and Denovan were appointed delegates for the council meeting to be held at Silverstream.
The monthly competition (best jar of marmalade) was won by Mrs. Hopkirk, and the thrift article by Mrs. Scaife, with Mrs. White second.
The following hostesses served the afternoon tea: Mesdames Wale, White, Simpson, and W. Robinson.
