HAROLD LOGAN IN CUP

A SURPRISE ENTRY

FORMER DEEDS RECALLED

(By "Ariki Toa.")

An interesting point in connection with the nominations for the New Zealand Trotting Cup, to be run at Addington next month, is the inclusion of Harold Logan, who has been on the retired list since 1936. As it costs £4 to enter a horse in the big Addingtdn event it is unlikely that Mr. E. F. C. Hinds is throwing his money away, and evidently this star of a few seasons ago still retains much of the vitality he exhibited »vhen racing previously. Whether he will see the post is open to doubt, but at least his nomination will revive memories. The praises of Harold Logan have been sung before; his records speak for themselves; his gameness has never been doubted, and it has carried him through in many a strenuous battle, where others would have failed. His wonderful knowledge of what was required of him stamped him as a superhorse in many respects. Again, he had any amount of changes in drivers but failed for none of them, and altogether he was a model of equine intelligence, A FINE RECORD. Of the 99 races Harold Logan contested he won on 29 occasions, and filled a place in twenty other events. His record is all the more meritorious when it is considered that he was more or less unsound throughout his career, and the utmost care had to be taken with him in his training. It speaks volumes for his courage and determination that he ultimately trained on until he was 14 years of age, being finally retired after winning the Free-for-All at Addington in 1936. Harold Logan is a son of Logan Pointer, probably the greatest sire ever imported to the Dominion. This stallion comes from a famous pacing family, for his sire, Star Pointer, was the first horse to enter the two-minute list in America. The dam of Harold Logan is Ivy Cole, a daughter of King Cole, 2.8 3-5, from Wisconsin, by Duncan Abdallagh from Charity. Ivy Cole was bred by Mr. J. J. Coffey, who also bred Harold Logan. The latter was sold to Mr. P. Brown, who owns Roi lOr, but after passing through a couple of sportsmen's hands he was finally secured by Mr. Hinds. The son of Logan Pointer opened his racing career in convincing style, winning the second trotting event at a Waimate Racing Club's Meeting at his first start, The succeeding season he failed to get into the money in four outings, but as a seven-year-old, the following year, he carried all before him, winning seven of his last rune races. AN EXCELLENT SEASON. * In his first start as an eight-year-old Harold Logan won the Canterbury Handicap at! Addington in August, and followed this up by annexing the Oamaru and Courtenay Handicaps at the Cup Meeting. In the Auckland Trotting Cup in December he should never have been beaten by Carmel, for he was forced to cover a lotor extra ground, and then finished with a rare burst of speed practically underneath the judge's box. He made amends by winning the New Zealand Trotting Gold Cup at Hutt Park. In filling third place to Regal Voyage and Lindbergh in the Midsummer Handicap at the Metropolitan Summer Meting he registered 4min 13 2-ssec. Two subsequent placings saw him at the top of the stake-winners with £2655. He won his first New Zealand Trotting Cup as a nine-year-old, after qualifying for the final by gaining fourth place in the first heat. His only other success that season was the Free-for-All at the same meeting. Three more victories came his way in the ensuing term, among them being the New Zealand Cup and the New Zealand Trotting Gold Cup, both for the second time. Incidentally he again finished at the top of the winning list by amassing £1870 in stakes. In 1934 this brilliant gelding was seen in a series of match races against the Australian pacers Walla Walla and Auburn Lad. All the honours were with Harold Logan, who won two of the three contests. In the following year he was probably responsible for the greatest performance of his career when he registered 4min 12 2-ssec—a world's record' for two miles, the feat being accomplished in finishing third to Indianapolis and Blue Mountain in the New Zealand Trotting Cup. In the ensuing twelve months he collected another four victories, and wound up his career with a win in the Free-for-All, as stated before. WON OVER £11,000.
