MR. GEORGE W.^ LANHAM

Well known in New Zealand sporting circles and as a prominent member of the softgoods trade, Mr. George Walter Lanham, of St. Clair, whose death occurred at Oamaru; was born in Wellington in 1872. As a boy he joined the staff of Messrs. " Kirkcaldie and Stains, Wellington, . and a few. years later transferred ,to the D;i.C.,: Christchurch. In 1905 he was appointed goldfields traveller for Messrs. Bihg Harris and Co., and afterwards Was I appointed head of that firm's clothing department. Twelve years after start-! ing with the Dunedin firm he left to: take up. the position :of head of the! clothing department of Messrs. Butterworth Bros., and eventually he became manager of that business.

In his" youth the'late Mr. Lanham was a keen" cyclist, winning many tVophies. He was also interested in football, being a member of the Petpne Club. Cricket also claimed his attention, and while he was in Christchurch he was a member of the Highland Rifles, For many years he was an active member of the St. Clair Bowling Club. o " ! -
