AN OTAGO- SURVEY

MINISTERIAL ACTIVITY

DUNEDIN; October 3. Labour Ministers have addressed a number of .meetings in Otagb and Southland during the ' past week.. Evidently, with -so much prominence given to this part of the Dominion, three of Dunedin's four city seats are not regarded by Labour as being as safe as they .were three years ago. The Nationalists are also active. Mr.' Bodkin addressed one meeting—a very disorderly one—and now Mr. Hamilton is to make his appearance, in the same hall as the Prime Minister.-In Dunedin Central the National candidate Mr. W. ,J. Meade continues , tomake good progress. In Dunedm. North the Nationalist Mr. A. S. Falconer has been gaining ground, and it is fortunate for Mr. J. W. Munro that by the alteration of boundaries he now has Port Chalmers in his electorate. His defeat years ago by the ex-Mayor, Mr. H. I*. Tapley, is not overlooked by 'his party, but the seaport vote should help him. Dunedin West is still being keenly contested by Mr. T. K. S. Sidey and Dr. D. G. McMillan. On the hill part of this electorate, overlooking the city, the Nationalist's followers are very confident, but the Kaikorai Valley and the foreshore will vote Labour. Until three years ago, when the Hon. W. Downie Stewart was defeated, by Dr. McMillan, this had never been a Labour seat, so the National Party has reason to be hopeful. % Mr. E. P. Aderman, Nationalist candidate for Dunedin South, has made a good impression at his meetings, but this is a particularly strong Labour electorate. The Hon.*. Jones, however, may not find his majority so large. , Labour is making every effort to retain, the Invercargill seat and to win Wallace and Awarua. Mr. oava«e is speaking tomorrow night and » Semple has already addressed ■» »«*" ing m the far south; but Southlanders art unlikely to change their-vote of three years ago, when Mr. Hanulton and' Mr. Hargest were given loyal "Tr^D. McDougall, Independent can. didate for Mataura, as *™f^% garded as safe for Mr. J. A. M. ttoy and Mr. W.
