GOVERNMENT FLATS

BIG WELLINGTON BLOCK

An announcement that tenders were being called by the Government for the construction of the multi-unit block of fiats in Adelaide Road, Berhampore, and would close on October 27, was made by Mr. R. McKeen, Labour candidate for Wellington South, at his open-air meeting at the corner of Howard and Wallace Streets,. last night. He said that the block would consist of 50 flats of the most modern design and suitable for all requirements.

An increasing number of skilled workers was available for the erection of, Government houses, and the aim was 5000 houses a year, said Mr. McKeen. The future policy would be to call for tenders for building one, two, or three houses instead of for large numbers, so that people would have the opportunity of choosing their sections according to the locality they favoured. .

The meeting was attended by between 400 and 500 people, and Mr. K. Baxter was in charge of proceedings. A vote of thanks and confidence was carried by acclamation.
