OBITUARY
MARSHAL AVERESCU
(Received October 4, 9.50 a.sa.\ BUCHAREST, October 3. The death has occurred of Marshal Alexander Averescu, a former Premier of Rumania.
Marshal A.. Averescu was born in 1859 and was Minister of War in 1907 and Chief of Staff in 1911. In 1913 he conducted the military operation* in the war against Bulgaria. He commanded the 2nd and 3rd Armies in 1916, and later the Army of the Dobruja, and became enormously popular with the. soldiers, a fact which aided his political career. In March, 1918, he was asked by the king to form a Cabinet, and he conducted the peaca negotiations with the Central Povnors. He became president of the People League (later the People's Party), and the party came into power in 1920, with the Marshal as Prime Minister. After holding office for a year, he resigned on December 17, 1921, but remained president of the party. On the retirement of the Bratianu Government in March, 1926, he formed another Gov« ernment, but resigned in Jurie, 1927, and was succeeded by Count Stribejg.
