TRAFFIC TUNNEL
ITS WESTERN ACCESS
The Wellington Chamber of Commerce wrote to the City Council last night in connection with fhe western approaches to the Hataitai traffic tunnel. The letter said recommendations of the Access Commission regarding the immediate approach to the tunnel should be given effect to at the earliest possible moment. The Chamber asked if the council had any intention of giving effect to these recommendations, and if so, when. It was also suggested that no permits should be issued for the erection of permanent buildings in positions which would be inimical or detrimental to the completion of the scheme envisaged by the Commission.
"I would suggest that the Chamber of Commerce should get a little information, which is always available, and then it would find out that so far as the diagonal road is concerned that area belongs to the Roman Catholic authorities, and that they have been extremely helpful, and have put no buildings across areas which might be required, and that that area is clear of buildings now, and will remain so until taken over," said the Mayor (Mr. T. C. A. Hrslop). "The Chamber of Commerce could equally easily have ascertained that to put a road through on that line would cost £40,000. Then it might have advised us how that money was to be found. I suggest we should send a x-eply that we have the matter fully in mind and that when the money has become available the matter will be dealt with." This course was agreed to.
