FINE AT FIRST

MORE WIND COMING

Special forecast for Wellington:— Moderate to strong north-Westerly winds, rising later to gale force. Weather fine at first, but later becoming cloudy to overcast. Temperatures mild. The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon today for the ensuing twenty-four hours, is for moderate south-westerly to westerly winds, but winds will veer gradually to the north-west and will increase in force, especially about and south of Cook Strait. In districts with a westerly aspect the weather will be cloudy to overcast and scattered rain is probable, more especially from Taranaki southwards. In eastern, districts it will be fair to fine. Temperatures will be mild. ""For a while yesterday the tail end of a slight westerly depression which was crossing the North Island caused some light rain to fall in an area bounded roughly by New Plymouth, Tauranga, and Auckland, but otherwise the weather on the whole was good. A few showers fell\ on the West Coast of the South Island, but the rainfalls there were light, 26 points at Greymouth being the largest total recorded. Pressure has remained high in the north and over the Tasman Sea, but is low in the vicinity of the Chatham Islands. Hence moderate south-westerly winds have predominated except east of the ranges, where there have been local north-wester-lies or sea breezes. Temperatures in the east have been warm, and over, the rest of the Dominion mild. Auckland's weather yesterday was dull and unsettled, seven points of rain falling during the early afternoon. The rain ceased about 3 p.m., however, when the wind which had been a fresh west-north-westerly backed to the south-west and decreased. Temperatures were mild, the maximum being 63.2 degrees and the minimum 51.8 degrees, « After having an overcast sky in the early morning, Wellington was treated to a brilliantly fine and mild day, with 7.9 hours of bright sunshine. A moderate to fresh north-westerly wind prevailed but dropped during the night. The maximum and minimum temperatures were 65.1 and 49.1 degrees respectively. Christchurch had a sunny morning and a cloudy afternoon, with a light to moderate north-easterly breeze. The weather was clear again this morning after a light frost of two degrees. Yesterday's maximum and minimum temperatures were 61.8 and 46.7 degrees. Dunedin had a fine and mild day, with bright sunshine and a few passing clouds. There was a moderate south-westerly breeze which became light during the night, and this morning a north-easterly sea breeze was blowing.
