SUCCESS IN DOUBLES
LOS ANGELES, October 2. Playing spectacular tennis, H. Hopman and L. Schwartz (Australia) beat J. D. Budge and C. G Mako (U.S.A.), 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3, in the semi-finals of the doubles in the Pacific South-West Coast championships. Hopman's overhead work was superb and his stroking inspired Schwartz. The Australians were cheered to the echo by a crowd of 3000 as Hopman pulled bis service from the fire in the fourth set to win the deciding game. The Australians lost only one game apiece on their services in the last three *sets. In the singles Hopman beat J. Bromwich (Australia), 6-3, 6-3, 10-8, after the! latter had led 5-1. 40-30, in the final set. Hopman and Quist meet in the final tomorrow. In the women's singles Miss M. E. Lumb (Great Britain) beat Miss N. Wynne (Australia), . 6-4, 3-6, 7-5; Madame R. Mathieu (France) beat Mrs. H. Hopman (Australia). 6-2, 6-3. The local Press is of opinion that the rout of the American tennis play^ers that has taken place recently sounds a note of warning to American hopes of retaining the Davis Cup.
