PLEA OF GUILTY

YOUTH GETS PROBATION

Pleading guilty to being intoxicated in charge of a motor-car at Titahi Bayon Sunday, Mervyn Vincent Jones, a farmer, aged 19, of Pahautanui,- appeared before Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court yesterday. Senior-Sergeant D. J. O'Neill, who prosecuted, said that at 11.30 p.m. on Saturday Traffic Inspector Crawford was on patrol duty at Titahi Bay. He saw the accused with other young men around a motor-car trying- to mend a puncture. The inspector was about the locality until 12.30 a.m.,. and then commenced driving in towards Porirua. While he was doing so, the car he had previously seen passed him, and he saw that it was driven by the accused, whom he had previously noticed staggering slightly. The car had no tyre on one of its wheels, and was without a tail-light. It was being driven very hard in second gear. The inspector stopped the car about a mile north of the Porirua hall, and took the accused into town, where at about 2 a.m. a doctor certified him as being unfit to drive a car. At the time of his arrest he was in an advanced stage of ~ intoxication. It was his first appearance before a Court. The accused admitted having had two drinks about 6 p.m., but could not remember having any more. He was admitted to probation for two years, a special condition being that he should not drive a motorvehicle during that period. His licence was cancelled.
