MAXAM IS SPEEDY

TE HERO FOR ELLERSLIE

(Special from "Early Bird.")

AUCKLAND, October 3.

The early fancy for the Mitchelson. Cup is Francis Drake, while Mazir's triumph at the expense of a weak field in the. Poland Cup at Paeroa on Saturday suggests that he is more forward than was anticipated. Royal Bachelor and Marie's Acre are two horses likely to be most sought after in the Shorts Handicap, and Triune and Royevrus are certain to find favour in the seven-furlongs Flying Handicap.

It was anticipated that Te Hero's owner would give him all the racing possible to. fit him for the longer classics and special weight races after his two exhibitions at Avondale, and in addition to his engagement in the Guineas at headquarters next Saturday he has been entered for the Stewards' Handicap at the New Zealand Cup Meeting. He is also expected to race at Trentham on the way south. Judging by the manner in which Sly Fox ran away with the Champion Hack Plate at Avondale last month he is capable of winning in any haclc company. He is to have his next appearance in the. Gordon Handicap at Ellerslie on Saturday, and it will be in his favour that'the race will have to be divided, although even then the fields will be very big in each division. With 9.9 backers will not be deterred from heavily supporting the Gisborne representative, who is merely running out his hack nomination* next weekend.

Considerable interest will be taken in the next appearance of the two-year-old Beau Repaire. which will probably be in the Welcome Stakes at Ellerslie on Saturday. This youngster, a half-brother by Beau Pere to Royal Chief, took the eye as the best-looking juvenile in the Avondale Stakes, • although he was not sufficiently advanced in his preparation to be able to make a good showing. He has had three weeks to improve, and it is possible he will be a different horse, next start.

. One of the easiest of wins registered at Paeroa last Saturday was that of Maxam in the opening event, which the half-sister to Palustre won by a substantial margin and was .hard held. The distance was only five furlongs but she was always in front, and in the straight it was just a question qf the winning margin: She is going to be a good winner this season and may be even better than was first thought. Round Up was not quite forward enough when he contested the Poland Cup at Paeroa. However, he went a fair race, and that outing should do much to bring him along for his coming engagements at Ellerslie. where he is in the Flying Handicap, run" over seven furlongs. Always noted for her speed father than a solid finishing effort, it wa3 interesting to note Miss Te Koura playing an entirely different role when she took on the open sprint at Paeroa. She missed the jump out through being on her toes, and consequently she was not well placed in the early part. She was up fifth at the home turn,, and her third place at the judge was impressive, indicating that she may be. com*. ing solid with age. On that one run she must possess a fine chance in the hack sprint at Ellerslie. Triune revealed at Avondale that he may shortly win a race over any distance up to a mile. He is still somewhat erratic at the barrier, and this may be one of the reasons why he is carded for the open seven furlongs at Ellerslie instead of the usual sprint event, for he will have a bit more time to settle down. .
