WAR PREPARATIONS

ACTIVITY IN GERMANY

[By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, This Day, War preparations in Germany were vividly described by Mrs. %■. G. W. Sparrow, of Auckland, who returned by the Niagara today. "Although it was June when I was in Munich it was apparent to the most casual observer that something momentous was in the air. Peasants in the harvesting fields seemed to be working against time, 'going for their lives,'" she said. Mrs. Sparrow was travelling with a party of eight English people. They tried to get some expressions of opinion from residents, but it was difficult to find anyone who could speak Eng-j lish, and if they could they would not own up to it. "What impressed us was activity on the roads. Military transport wagons were always on the move, travelling convoy style, and at the time all other traffic was held up fori long periods. The civilians' wants i were a secondary consideration." She! said that at hotels great respect was shown military officers. Speaking of Norway, Mrs. Sparrow said that the people were wonderfully kind and went out of their way to assist visi-j tOM.
