"DEEP GRATIFICATION"

The following letter has been sent to Mr. Neville Chamberlain by the secretary of the Municipal Association of New Zealand:—"l have the honour, by the direction of the executive of the Municipal Association of New Zealand, representing 152 municipalities in this country, to convey to you their deep gratification at the news which reached us today of the agreement achieved at the Munich conference. I have also much pleasure in conveying our sincere appreciation and respectful approval of your courage in initiating direct conversations with the Chancellor of the German Reich, which have led to the maintenance of peace in Europe. Our earnest wish is that your efforts will be crowned with the establishment of that permanent peace which they merit."

The following cablegrams have been sent by the English-speaking Union of New Zealand: —

To the Rt. Hon. Neville Chamberlain: "The New Zealand branch of the Eng-lish-speaking Union express their keenest appreciation of your great work in the caudfe of world peace, and heartiest congratulations On its successful issue."

To President Roosevelt: "The New Zealand branch of the English-speaking Union greatly appreciates your efforts on behalf of world peace, the successful issue Of which draws still closer in the bonds of peace the peoples of our two great commonwealths."
