FATALLY ASSAULTED
FIRST PREMIER: OF £HINA
(Received October 1, noon.) SHANGHAI, September 30. Mr. Tpng Shao-Yi, the first Premier of the Chinese Republic, was attacked by two Chinese with hatchets and died from the hi juries he received.
The late Mr. Tong was born in 1869 and was sent to America in 1873 bys the Ching Government among the first , -_; group of Chinese students and stay* ed'there for seven years. He attend* ed the Columbia and New York Uni* , ' versities, but returned to China befora . he had graduated. He helped to sup* press the Boxer disturbances in 1900, After the establishment of the Repub* - lie he was appointed the first Prime Minister in 1912. He has been tivm ing in retirement at Hong Kong, Can* ton, and Shanghai since 1923.
