PETROL REMAINS HIGH

AUCKLAND, This Day,

The Customs revenue collected at Auckland showed a marked decrease in September compared with September in 1937. The collection last month was £274,987, a decrease of almost £80,000.

During the nine months of this year the Customs revenue has totalled £2,566,520. In the corresponding period of 1937 the amount was £2,592,382.

Motor spirit tax yielded £70,957 in September, which was an increase of £6625. The figures for the past nine months also show a considerable increase, the total being £641,524, compared with £573,250 in the same period of 1937. The revenue from tyre duty, however, declined sharply. The September yield, £2162, was only a little more than half the September figure. Last year, for the nine months period, the collection was £22,199, a decrease of over £4000. '

Sales tax yielded less in September, although the total for the past nine months was higher than last year. The decrease this month was £4537, the total being £85,265. The collection over the nine months was £755,692, against £749,454 from January to September in 1937.

The' revenue' from beer excise duty also decreased slightly this month. The yield was £14,041. Over the nine months the total was £149,361, £14,592 higher'than in the corresponding period last year.
