DEAR BEEF
PRICES HIGHER IN 1927

It was reported in Auckland recently that prices for store beef were higher than they had been during the last*2o years. While" agreeing that beef was high just now, a Dunedin butcher stated that in the spring of 1927 it was higher than at present, going up to about £3 a 1001b. The price just how, he said, was about £2 10s a 1001b. He also. stated that there was a prospect of values becoming even dearer when more iced became available. Beef was always dearer here than in the North Island, as the latter contained more cattle country. The higher prices charged in Dunedin were attributed to seasonal conditions while iri the North Island increasing exports were stated to be mainly responsible for the very noticeable shortage of store beef for local consumption^ As far as sheep were concerned low quotations were still prevailing.
