QUALITY OF GAS
A STATEMENT NEEDED
The question whether "it would be advisable for the chairman to* make a public statement in view of the many complaints about the gas,'was raised by Mr. H. V. Horlorat the meeting ot the Petone and Lower Hutt Gas Lighting Board last evening. ■■.■,-: "It would undoubtedly prevent mem* bers being waylaid,." ;said Mr. H. G# Burrell. ■. -. .
"We can undoubtedly promise our. consumers more gas and better gas in. the near future," said Mr.; HorTor. It was decided that the chairman; should make a statement. The works engineer (Mr. I. Buchanan) reported that the gas manufactured during June was 11,362,000 cubic feet, which was an increase of 809,00» cubic feet over June of last year and a decrease of 123,000 cubic feet compared with May of this year. The fverage make per ton of coal waa 7,373 cubic feet. The make of gaa for June constituted a further record, the increase over the corresponding month last year being 8 per cent* The high make of gas per ton was. again due to the continued and extended use of water gas to augment the supply of straight coal gas.
A breach in the Skeidarar glacier, near the south-east coast of Iceland, possibly caused by volcanic action, has released so great a volume of water aa to cause its river to flood to a mile to. width and wash away the telephone wires. Traffic was interrupted, but not other damage has been done.
