SOUTHERLY CHANCE SOON

Special forecast for Wellington:— Moderate to strong north-westerly winds, with a change to southerlies soon. . , Weather cool and changeable, and occasional showers probable, but improving gradually. The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon today for the ensuing twenty-four hours, is for north-westerly to westerly winds at first in the North Island otherwise south-westerlies will prevail. Winds will be strong at times in the Cook •Strait area and south of Castlepoint, but otherwise will be mainly light to moderate in force. In western districts of the South Island the weather will be fine, but elsewhere it will be changeable with showers at times, but will improve later. Cooler tempera-, tures may be expected. The depression crossing the .Dominion yesterday had by this morning passed away east of the South Island, and a change to southerly weather has taken place over much of the Soutn Island. Strong and squally north-west-erly winds blew last night about and south of Cook Strait, conditions being particularly boisterous in the latter area. Although still strong this morning in some exposed positions, winds have now decreased in force. Bam fell last night in most districts, with some rather heavy falls about Cook Strait and also in places in the western and far southern parts of the South Island. This morning, however, although still changeable and showery in places, conditions had much improv- j ed, and in Westland the weather is fair to fine. In the South Island temperatures have become cooler than they have bWn recently. It was fine in Auckland early yesterday morning, but the sky gradually clouded over and there was a light fall of rain during the afternoon. Winds were light and variable, but mainly northerly in direction, and the maximum and minimum temperatures were 83 and 66.9 degrees respectively. The weather this morning was calm and overcast. In Wellington it was cloudy, warm, and humid, with an occasional trace of rain. A north-westerly wind prevailed, and during the. evening and night the wind reached gale force. Between 6.15 and 7.30 p.m. the rain was fairly heavy, 20 points being the total recorded at Kelburn. The sunshine yesterday amounted to 4.6 hours, and the maximum temperature was 72.1 degrees with a minimum of 63.2 degrees. Christchurch had a dull day, with some light rain during the afternoon, the maximum temperature being 70.5 degrees arid the minimum 56 degrees. A moderate to fresh north-easterly wind blew yesterday, but a southerly breeze was blowing this morning, the weather at 9 a.m. being fine and clear. Dunedin also had dull weather, with a strong north-easterly wind, five points of rain falling in the evening. At 9 a.m. today, however, the weather was fine, although a strong south-westerly wind was blowing.
