OBITUARY
BARON ATHOLSTAN
! (Received January 31, 1.5 p.m.) ' MONTREAL, January 30. The death has occurred, at the ago rof 90, of Baron Atholstan, publisher of the Montreal "Star." As Hugh Graham, a Quebec farm I boy, he founded the paper in partnership with George Lanigan, dissolving the partnership when Lanigan advocated the annexation of Canada by the United States. ' In the stringent pioneer days, he hauled newsprint by wheelbarrow. He was an ardent Imperialist and persuaded Sir Wilfred Laurier to send a Canadian contingent to the Boer War.
Lord Atholstan, first baron of that name, was raised to the peerage in 1917. He was born at Athelstan, Canada, in 1848. He was president of the "Daily Star," Montreal, and of the "Weekly Star," Montreal. He was identified with many charitable institutions and was an honorary LL.D of Glasgow University. He married Miss Annie Beekman Hamilton, of Montreal, and had one daughter. There is no heir to the barony, which is said to have been the first conferred on ti newspaperman outside Britain. A Knighthood was conferred on him in 1908.
