OBITUARY

SENATOR JOHN BARNES

(Received January 31. 2.45 p.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. The death has occurred of Senator John Barnes, who had been in failing health for some time. He will be given a State funeral. The Hon. John Barnes was Senator i for Victoria between 1913 and 1920, and since 1922. He was a member of various public boards and committees, I Assistant Minister of Works and Railways from 1929 to 1931, vice-president of the Executive Council in 1031 and 1932, and Leader of the Opposition in the Senate in 1932.

Mr. E. C. Huie, formerly managing editor of the "Sun," Christchurch, and latterly London representative of the Christchurch "Press," returned by the Akaroa today from Southampton.
