AMERICAN LABOUR LEADER
ARREST RECOMMENDED
WASHINGTON, January 27.
The Secretary *of Labour, Miss Frances Perkins, disclosed that the Seattle district' office of the Immigration Service has recommended ■ the arrest of Mr. H. Bridges, the Australian labour leader. i
The Labour Department is now investigating whether sufficient evidence exists for a deportation warrant. A formal hearing is expected soon.
' At the request of Senator Vanden^ berg, the Commerce and Labour Committees 6f the Senate agreed to demand fronf the Labour Department a full and immediate report on the citizenship!'and activities of Mr. Bridges, whose name figured in the evidence heard by the committee regarding" Pacific Coast disturbances in connection with an investigation dnto labour conditions in the merchant marine. A message on January 19 stated: The Mayor of Portland, Oregon, Mr. Carson, testifying before the Senate Commerce Committee, expressed annoyance 'with Mr. Harry Bridges, whom he described as an "Australian alien." Mr. Bridges appeared in Portland several times and criticised the city's government; , r Mr. Carson N declared that since , Mr. Bridges was not an American citizen, he had no right to do so. Labour disorders in the shipping industry had cost Portland 1,000,000,000 dollars during the past three years.
