The Minister" of Railways and Industries and Commerce, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, who is accompanied by the Attorney-General, the', Hon. H. G., X! Mason, and Mr. G. H.'. Mackley, Gene-, ral-Manager of Railways, had a number of requests placed, before him today. \ ' '- ':,,;--'
Deputations asked him.to undertake, as a national work the; prevention ol erosion by .the sea which- is damaging private property , t and threatening the main railway line;-, provide improved; railway >yard facilities-" at New,-: Plymouth; and explain the arrangement between the Railway Department and petrol companies as a result of which, because petrol from all companies but one is railed from Wellington, Tara> naki consumers are paying twopence a gallon more than Wellington.
Mr. Sullivan said the contract with the oil companies would expire this year, and it was open to Taranaki people to persuade all the companies to import'in bulk through New Plymouth.
The Minister was so impressed with' the danger of sea erosion that it is understood he decided to have a protecting wall erected. .
