ELECTED

The election of an Honorary Fellow and an Honorary Overseas Member was completed at the annual conference of the New; Zealand Institute of Horticulture. The honorary New Zealand Fellow is Mr. Thomas Horton, Pukekura Park, New Plymouth, and the overseas member. Sir William Wright Smith, Edinburgh.

Mr. Horton has' been engaged in horticulture since 1881. He introduced j Delicious and Senator apples, in addition to ; other strains. He has been superintendent at Pukekura Park and Brooklands Park, and established a sanctuary for New Zealand ferns as well as an aboretum for New Zealand trees. He holds the Diploma, of the Royal Horticultural Society and has won many gold medals in first-class competition./ .

Sir William Wright Smith is King's Botanist in Scotland. He is -Regius Keeper of the Royal Botanic -Gardens, Edinburgh, and Regius Professor of Botany at Edinburgh University. He formerly held botanical ■ positions in India, and has published works on the botany of India and China. ,

It was decided to ask the Government -to give serious consideration to the early establishment of a school of horticulture, which has already beca recommended.
