SURF LIFE-SAVING
TEAM FOR AUSTRALIA
RYAN REPLACES BLAKELEY
J. C; Blakeley, of Wellington, who was the first man selected to represent New Zealand in the surf life-saving team to visit Australia next month, will be unable to make the trip owing to private business of an urgent nature. ■
F. G. Ryan, of Ohawe, Taranaki, has been selected to take Blakeley's place in the team. Ryan, who is 32 years old, sft 9in tall, and who weighs' 12st 71b, is an ex-member of the Lyall Bay senior team, and has a winning Nelson Shield record. He put up,fastest time in the Peck. Shield harbour race in 1932, and has represented Wellington at water-polo for the past six years. , . At the New Zealand surf championships last week he won the individual surf race by strong swimming and the skilful use of waves and drift. In the belt trials on Monday he showed himself a .steady and reliable belt swimmer, though he beat none 6f the original nominees. He should do even better in a heavy surf. .:
